Hi, my name is Ben.

I am 21 years old.

Thanks for coming to my website.

I appreciate that.

This will be quick. If you want something more comprehensive, check this out.

An alarming amount of portfolios I have read seem to use very informal language

Like "lol"

or ":)".

Or even the f word.

What a strange way to show your humanity and your risk taking nature.

It's almost like trying to be the exception has become the rule.

I'll do this without saying the f word.

I hope you're not hiring people based on who uses the word fuck in their bio.

I was born in St. Louis.

On May 22nd 2003.

I moved around a lot,

and I ended up in NC.

I was a good kid, but some of my teachers didn't like me at all.

I couldn't write about the Great Gatsby without adding a section about how it relates to Gucci Mane.

Then I'd get a 54 and think I was a bad writer.

One day I just realized my individuality wasn't worth failing english class.

So I just started writing whatever the teacher wanted as if they had a gun to my head.

If you ask me, that was the day I became a copywriter.

----------

I also love music.

Picture a girl that loves horses more than anything in the world.

Then replace horses with music.

Yeah, okay. That's me.

Also I'm a guy, not a girl.

When I was a senior in high school I met an artist who's music I really liked.

I became really interested in how marketing changes for artists at different stages of their career.

When I went to college, we would talk on the phone for hours about business.

At a certain point, it was all I thought about.

----------

Meanwhile, I was trying to make the most out of my marketing degree.

I got settled in to the student advertising agency and I started writing as much as possible.

Soon after, I realized that I could use my writing to help businesses.

So I started doing as much freelance work as possible.

I thought it was crazy that I could help people by rearranging letters.

At a certain point, it was all I thought about.

Re-Bath
During my second semester at adworks, I worked as a copywriter for the Re-Bath account under the mentorship of Lavidge, an agency in Phoenix.

I enjoyed this campaign because a lot of the strategy was based on qualitative interviews we did with people. We basically talked to a bunch of old people and listened to them complain about their bathrooms. We were working with something pretty boring.

A lot of the ideas I had for this campaign were based on a three hour conversation I had with my grandmother, during which I could barely get a single word out. The only time she took a break from talking was to ask me if I had a girlfriend. I did not.

Background/Insights:

We were tasked with making a TV ad for Re-Bath that would appeal to millenials, gen x, and baby boomers.

I decided that overt segmentation is okay, and it would actually be a good way of showing that Re-Bath is highly adaptable to anybody’s needs.

I don’t typically like to lead with authority. In this case especially, perceived authority should be the culmination of a variety of value propositions that are pieced together by the consumer. Leading with authority allows the consumer to begin questioning why.

Selling on variety is also a challenge here.

Re-Bath can't be perceived as a cheap one size fits all solution.

And Re-Bath isn’t actually offering a “variety”. The word “variety” implies that there is still a finite selection.

Instead, Re-Bath is offering to make the perfect bathroom for its customers.

Finally, I had to be especially careful selling on price. The problem for Re-Bath was actually that they were seen as too cheap.

Whenever there's a widely held belief that is working against a company’s image, it’s much more effective to modify the existing perception instead of cultivating a new one.

I believed the way Re-Bath could do this was by framing low prices as the result of expertise and efficiency.

These were my contributions to the project:

I had an idea for a mockumentary style interview with a multi-generational household. The gen X family would talk about how easy the entire process was with Re-Bath taking care of every step of the process. Meanwhile, the grandmother would be talking about the Re-Bath man who came to “visit” her and how she wishes they did the bathroom slower.

I still think this would be a successful ad, but it didn’t quite check all the boxes in the brief. The ad needed to communicate to homeowners from each segment.

I decided to do an ad where the same house gets renovated by three different owners at different times.

It made the most sense for the millennial persona to be a young house flipper.

Research said Gen X didn’t like the minimalistic designs millennials like.

Baby Boomers don’t like smart tech and they need certain safety features.

Here’s the ad I wrote tying everything together:

Ad 1:

The camera shows them walking into a bathroom unsatisfied and stressed by all the work that needs to be done.

“We can’t sell it if the bathroom looks like this”

“Nah, I know a guy”

“How fast can he do it?”

The bathroom instantly turns into a more modern minimalist design.

Narrator: With Re-Bath, By the time you learn our names, we’ll already be done

Homeowner waving goodbye: “Bye Steve!”

Narrator: We’ll make a bathroom made for YOU

Millenial guy excitedly showing his friend the bathroom: A floating sink!

Gen X couple moving in: (unenthusiastically) “A floating sink?”

Narrator: Don’t worry, we’ve done this once or twice

Baby Boomer: I just need a walk in shower, and can we get a floating sink?

Narrator: Re-Bath: Every detail, for everybody.

Ad 2:

Narrator: "Everyone has their own style… and their own way of getting things done."

Gen Z (on Zoom with Re-Bath employee and shrugs): "Don’t care. Just make it quick."

Cut to: A Gen X person, slightly more engaged, reviewing a few design options with a thoughtful expression.

Gen X (smiling, pointing to a design): "I like this one the most."

Cut to: A Baby Boomer, very focused, pointing at a bathroom with a pencil and making detailed notes.

Boomer (micromanaging, intensely): “No, no, change the tiles. And the faucet... We need more storage here.

Narrator: "At Re-Bath, we let you decide how involved you want to be."

Cut to: A montage of beautiful bathroom transformations happening quickly.

Narrator: "From hands-off to hands-on, it’s all up to you."

End with the Re-Bath logo and tagline on screen.

Narrator: "Re-Bath: You decide who’s in charge."

Ad 3:

A guy proudly shows off his bathroom to friends. The bathroom is full odd design choices. The friends remain awkwardly silent and are not impressed

Narrator: "Whether it’s a bathroom made just for you…"

Owner of a different house knocks on their bathroom door.

"Are you still in there?"

Cut to: The friend inside, enthusiastically admiring the bathroom.

"This sink is beautiful!"

Narrator: “…or a bathroom everyone will love."”

Quick shots of a sleek, stylish, universally appealing bathroom transformation.

Narrator: "We’ll make it happen."

Narrator: "Re-Bath: Your Bathroom, Your Way."

Ad 4:

Narrator: They say good things come to those who wait.

Homeowner (Knocking on door): "How's the bathroom coming along?"

A contractor from another company opens the bathroom door in a towel, with wet hair, casually wiping his hands

Contractor (shrugging): "It's a big job, takes time.”

Narrator: At Re-Bath, we won’t overstay our visit.” Schedule a consultation today.

Additional slogans:

“Better bathing, on a budget”

"Better bathrooms are a Re-Bath away"

"Don't remodel, Re-Bath!”

“Your bathroom designed with you in mind”

“Anybody can make a bathroom. Not everybody can make your bathroom.”

‍“Refresh, Revamp, Re-Bath”

Eegee's

For my First Semester at AdWorks, I was a strategist for the Eegee’s account, under the mentorship of employees from an advertising agency in Phoenix.

Eegee's was struggling to sell slushies in the Phoenix market, specifically in the East Valley.

The competitors were places like Swig and Sodalicious.

Where I'm from, these places don't exist. People just go out for coffee.

Why were establishments selling only soda so popular in the East Valley?

Because the East Valley is extremely Mormon, and Mormons don't drink coffee.

That's why places like Sodalicious have options to add caffeine.

My adworks team didn't like me because I was the new guy and I was immediately saying to go against the breif.

Our brief said no caffeine drinks.

The team at Commit said that the launch of the "macchiato buzz" slushie was a massive flop.

But the macchiato buzz was a slushie with cookie crumbles on it. Of course it flopped.

And as the 19 year old strategist, I had discovered another important insight:

Mormons actually love caffeine, they just can't have coffee or tea.

That includes coffee flavored things, especially coffee flavored things with caffeine.

But the failure of the macchiato buzz was being attributed to caffeine.

I believed these two tiny mistakes would probably cost Eegee's hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I proposed the addition of an "Energee" drink with customization options, no coffee.

What I thought would be a smooth presentation turned into an unexpected barrage of criticism.

After the meeting, I emailed them a long write up with more context.

I was taught that I should fight to bring good ideas into this world.

They got back to me right away.

They doubled down and basically said "sorry, try harder"

That's when I realized—sometimes, people just don't like your ideas.

I ended up coming up with an idea for an after school program and a new coupon concept for the eegee's app, where users travel to a different part of the world every time they buy a slushie.

They loved those ideas, but I didn't find them to be particularly special at all.

And it took me a while to learn that I actually did everything right.

A lot of times in marketing, good ideas are harder to sell than bad ones.

You can do everything right and still fail.

I think one of the strategists noticed how much I cared, because he came up to me at a networking event and gave me loads of advice. I was grateful that he saw something in me and didn't feel like he had to dumb things down for me.

Around a year later, in late Summer 2023, Eegee's actually released the Energee, exactly as I had proposed.

I could finally sleep at night knowing that someone, months later, likely heard my idea and decided to implement it.

Am I mad?

No.

I have bigger things to be mad about.

Like war, and climate change.

McDonald's
For my third semester at adworks, I was placed as an account executive for the McDonald’s account.

My job was to help people learn their roles, organize meetings, and fill in the gaps when necessary.

We worked directly with a contact at McDonald’s who asked us to come up with a way to celebrate the orders of everyday people.

The team at McDonald’s had noticed some negative reception to their celebrity campaigns which featured the orders of famous people. Regular people basically said that they didn’t care what Kim Kardashian ordered.

One of our strategists came up with the idea of a “McMe Meal” campaign, where people could create a button in the app with a custom order that could be shared.

We thought about having a leaderboard with rewards, but this would go against the nature of the campaign as influencers would naturally rise towards the top.

Additionally, the two main obstacles in writing copy for this campaign:

  1. The idea of the McMe meal is very similar to Burger King’s “Have it your way” messaging, where the brand is taking a step back and acknowledging that no matter what they do, the customer still knows what they want more than anybody else. Copy has to take an original enough angle, otherwise McDonald’s isn’t playing their hand. The book Positioning by Al Ries and Jack trout warns against trying to use an established value proposition of a competitor. I really considered including the slogan: “Your Meal, Your Way—Always” But this sounded too much like “Have it your way”.

  1. It was important to write copy that avoided conveying a "universal accolade" or "everyone gets a trophy" sentiment, as this would undermine the sense of exclusivity that is central to the McMe meal concept.

To steer away from the universal accolade feeling I wanted to take a more serious approach with more traditional TV style advertisements. This would also help avoid appearing too much like burger king as video provides more room for context and differentiation. Here are some of the contributions I made:

Ad 1

A man gets out of his car, enters a McDonald's and goes behind the counter to make a meal himself. He asks where the bags are and the employees point to the stack of bags. The ad freezes over a blurry frame of him walking out and text appears: “The McMe meal. Take Things Into Your Own Hands.

Ad 2

A woman in sweats and sunglasses gets out of a car with paparazzi surrounding her as she tries to get into McDonald's. She is confused why everybody is following her. She gets inside and the paparazzi immediately starts doing the same to the next customer. Every Meal is a Masterpiece. The McMe meal.

Ad 3

Similar to Ad 2, but a man is signing the paparazzi’s bags outside a McDonald’s.

Reporters are talking over each other, one reporter shouts:

“Sir how did you come up with an order that nobody’s ever thought of”

The man ignores the reporter and continues signing people’s bags

The audio stops.

The ad freezes on a birds eye shot with a signed bag center frame.

The ad cuts to a close up of just the signed bag.

The McMe Meal

Find Your Signature Meal

Ad 3

McDonald's food scientists gives a tour through their facility and explains the high level of detail that goes into the flavor profile of each meal. The ad cuts back and forth between this and an unemployed drunk guy explaining in a bro science manner how to order the perfect hangover meal from McDonald's, noting that you have to put the fries in a mcflurry and order only 4 McNuggets and eat them BEFORE you eat the quarter pounder with extra pickles for electrolytes. Like wayyy extra pickles.

The McMe meal.

Sometimes you just know better.

Ad 4

The ad begins with a captain screaming at his ship’s crewmates in a rough storm. Text in the top left corner says

“Ferdinand Magellan, 41” with the subheading “First to travel around the globe.”

Then cuts scenes of:

“Amelia Earhart, 34, First woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.”

“Sir Edmund Hillary (33) & Tenzing Norgay (39), First to climb Mount Everest”

“Neil Armstrong, 38, First person to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission.”

“Steve, 31, First to dip McDonald’s fries into an Oreo McFlurry”

The ad cuts on a shot of the dipped fries directly in front of the man’s face.

The McMe Meal

What's next for McDonald's?

----------------------------------------------------

Additional Slogans:

The Greatest Innovation in Fast Food.

Personalized to Perfection.

You like what YOU like.

Designed and Devoured by You.

Forget Famous.

-----------------------------------------------------

The team did a lot of research and brainstorming on user generated content and what brands can do to encourage it. We decided that the best way to do this would be to have a stage 2 of the campaign highlighting odd meals people have submitted, with billboards showing the items and the states they were submitted in. This subtly invites people to come up with an order that is even more ridiculous and share it on social media.

It is also worth considering the possibility of holding an official competition during this stage where users can share personal stories alongside their meal for a chance to be selected by McDonald’s to have their meal featured on the menu with a % of each order being donated to charity. The risk of doing this is that this part of the campaign may become incongruent with the rest of the campaign if it turns into an viral mess like the grimace shake campaign. In this case, online shenanigans would undermine any positive messaging McDonald's is attempting to push and consumers would simply view this as out of touch and incohesive with what the campaign has become.

The best part about this campaign is that it doesn’t have to end. The McMe meal button can and should remain as an option within the mobile app, even after ads are finished running.

Recruitment

For my last two semesters at AdWorks, I was elected to be the head of recruitment for the organization.

Each semester, our advisor only allows us to accept a certain number of students.

Most of the people applying were already students who were highly motivated. For the first three weeks of each semester I was completely slammed with reading applications and conducting interviews.

Usually around 40 people apply, and we can let in about 20. During my two semesters, we had around 80 people applying each semester, and I would interview about ⅓ of them.

Going in, I had two goals: Increase the amount of perspectives we had, and filter out resume padders/people who wouldn’t care.

A lot of the people in the club were book smart, but weren’t very creative. When you’re by the book, it’s extremely difficult to think outside the box.

The first thing I did was get rid of the GPA question on the application.

But I had to find a better way of making sure that people were capable of doing the work.

I noticed that some people asked me a lot of questions and were really trying to prepare to be the best they could. But certain people would treat me as a barrier, or ask questions to see how much they would be able to coast. I had to differentiate people who were scared of failure (which is fine) and people who were scared of work.

The hardest part of this job was having to reject 60 people each semester. It felt like I was making more enemies than friends. On campus, I would run into a different person I had rejected almost every day.

The most rewarding part was seeing the new members become friends with existing members, and seeing people I recruited in spring 2024 naturally become mentors for the fall 2024 new members.

What I also found rewarding was the difference in leadership skills everybody on the executive board had throughout the year. Spring recruitment was full of heated arguments almost every single day, while fall recruitment was an absolute breeze.

However, carrying even a degree of responsibility for others' futures wasn't really an easy thing to do. I’m not a gatekeeper. I think anybody can be good at marketing if they want to. Having to be the gatekeeper weighed down on me a lot. And because of this, I did everything I could to make sure I was actually the most knowledgeable copywriter, strategist, and marketer at the school. That was my real responsibility. As the first point of contact people have joining the club, I was the go-to person for questions, advice, and guidance by default.

Lazz

I met lazz when I was 17.

He was a bit older than me, and he was probably the most popular person in my town.

We became friends because of music.

One thing I noticed about artists is that people love giving them unsolicited advice.

People do it to Lazz all the time.

I did it to him. But for some reason he didn't mind.

We would talk about our ideas all the time.

One time he just stopped and said "Can you be my manager?"

Lazz is the reason I've done all sorts of things.

He's the reason I got good at Facebook ads.

I spent weeks fine tuning his Facebook ads account so his CPC could be well below industry benchmarks.

He's the reason I started reading music industry blogs and books.

One time I went to the studio with Lazz.

I had just read All There is to Know About the Music Business By Donald Passman.

The book says that managers should be able to talk to every type of person an artist encounters.

I found myself talking to the audio engineer and it felt very awkward.

The engineer could clearly tell that I had no idea about anything audio related.

I was so embarrassed that I went home and downloaded Ableton that night.

Over the next few months, I made sure to learn everything I possibly could.

It was the first time I spent over a year being bad at something while putting in a great amount of effort.

Eventually it became a hobby and has turned into one of my biggest interests.

I was able to return the favor by helping Lazz get a home studio set up to record demos at home.

Over the last year he's recorded around 250 songs.

I listened to them. They're almost all good.

He went from making 3-4 songs per month to making at least 5 songs per week.

One time Thouxanbanfauni needed Lazz to open for him, so I skipped class to fly in to Atlanta from PHX.

When I landed, Lazz told me he needed some business cards, so I headed to the Ponce De Leon Staples.

While they were printing, I was waiting outside and talked to a homeless man with golden shoes.

He told me that I would be a great manager as long as I don't steal money from black people.

I think about this a lot still.

In 2023, Lazz released the album Floating which is my personal favorite.

I designed the album cover in the summer of 2022 and Lazz spent a while finishing it.

To this day it is the only time he's ever let me touch his visual design.

When he dropped it, he added 4 songs I had never heard before as a surprise.

One of them is my all time favorite:

Electric Slide, produced by our good friend FearFraaz.

Lazz consistently impresses me with his ability to branch out as an artist.

We will probably be close friends/associates until I die from him not dropping his unreleased music.

Tim Jewls

Tim Jewls is the best artist in Phoenix right now.

I saw him for the first time when he opened for our friend Kenny Hilton at Therespace studios in Phoenix.

He is such a good performer that he kind of ruined the rest of the show after him.

I ran into him a while later when MIKE threw an afterparty for his show in Phoenix.

He didn't have anybody helping him out with bookings and marketing, so we agreed to start working together.

We started planning shows and releases, and executing on ideas he had been sitting on for a while.

I made him a press kit right away and started working on outreach.

Thank you! Your submission has been received!

Eventually one of his friends wanted to manage him so we amicably end the relationship.

I was a bit disappointed because I was in the middle of getting him booked for Viva Phoenix, a big festival.

Regardless, I am glad to have played my part in helping him reach his goals.

About This Site

When I did recruitment for advertising club, I got tired of looking at bad portfolios.

I made this site using Webflow so that I could do something more interactive and weird.

I wanted to keep it brief and only show major projects. Feel free to reach out and ask to see other work.

The site’s layout is primarily a single page, and each window you open is actually a component.

Most of the content is powered by Webflow’s CMS so I can keep it organized and easy to update.

The windows use global and combo classes, so they can be opened and closed anywhere on the site. There is a close function to make sure one window shuts before another opens.

Windows like the one you are in right now can be closed by clicking the background or that little square in the top left.

The mini bar is its own symbol, built using a navbar component, with a drop-down menu for navigation.

I'm going to keep updating this site until I think of an idea I like more. I want to make the scroll bars functional and add back buttons next. I'll probably add some cooler animations and easter eggs.

Wow.

I'm actually really disappointed in you right now.

This was a test. And you failed.

Don't say sorry now.

*notes: I don’t like the “your items will disappear soon” subject line a lot of companies use. MAYBE use it when there’s an overwhelming amount of items that took a lot of work to get in the cart. But people are bugged more by the fact that an incomplete cart is always going to be taking up space in the company’s database somewhere. It feels like owing someone money. Why would we offer to clean up their tracks and cut ties/erase any obligations they have to us? On top of that, we promise even more friction for them if they decide to come back after the fact.
*Considerations for first email:

Dear PBA family,

Since we started our company over a decade ago, we have inevitably faced some criticism.

But here’s the catch: this is precisely what has made us the company we are today.

Sometimes the only way to get better is to listen to people’s problems.

And that’s exactly what we do. We fix problems.

Every complaint we get is given a serious time of day. If there’s a better way to serve our customers, it happens immediately.

That’s why you find very little issues with our products and services.

And it pays off. We don’t get very much criticism anymore.

Our company itself has become bulletproof. And we couldn’t have done so without a few live fire tests.

We are always improving. If you have any feedback or thoughts for us, reply to this email.

If you’d like to tell the world how great we are, please leave a review. We can only pat ourselves on the back so much.

Cheers,

Premier Body Armor Team

About PBA Emails

Premier Body Armor hired me to rewrite the copy for their main email flows.

I was also tasked with writing a sunset flow, review request, and abandoned checkout flow, which didn't exist before.

For the abandoned checkout flow, PBA had a reminder email and a follow up offering a 15% discount.

My changes to the reminder email copy resulted in an increase in placed orders from 0.7% to 0.9%.

This was tested to statistical significance, but it was still very small.

I then added a second email that offered a 10% discount.

This resulted in a drop in conversions from 3.6% to 3.5%.

The improvement to this flow were most noticeable when you look at the third email.

This email offered the same 15% discount as the original second email, but resulted in a 1.3% conversion rate.

This means that my changes to this flow resulted in 32.5% more conversions, and less money spent on discounting.

For the restock flow, PBA had a single email converting at 2.6%.

First, I changed the copy of the first email to achieve a conversion rate of 5.4%.

Next, I added a second email which resulted in a conversion rate of 3.6%.

That means that my changes to this flow resulted in 246.1% more conversions than the previous copy.

-only feature one item
-either the one they put in their cart first or the best selling item from their cart

Subject: We have been facing criticism.

Preview: We’d like to address the criticism we have received…

*notes: I don’t like the “your items will disappear soon” subject line a lot of companies use. MAYBE use it when there’s an overwhelming amount of items that took a lot of work to get in the cart. But people are bugged more by the fact that an incomplete cart is always going to be taking up space in the company’s database somewhere. It feels like owing someone money. Why would we offer to clean up their tracks and cut ties/erase any obligations they have to us? On top of that, we promise even more friction for them if they decide to come back after the fact.

*notes: I don’t like the “your items will disappear soon” subject line a lot of companies use. MAYBE use it when there’s an overwhelming amount of items that took a lot of work to get in the cart. But people are bugged more by the fact that an incomplete cart is always going to be taking up space in the company’s database somewhere. It feels like owing someone money. Why would we offer to clean up their tracks and cut ties/erase any obligations they have to us? On top of that, we promise even more friction for them if they decide to come back after the fact.

Cheers,

Copywriting Lecture

This is a copywriting training I held for the student advertising agency at ASU.

It aims to communicate basic copywriting principles while functioning as a reflection of those very principles.

The entire presentation is in lowercase in accordance with adworks brand guidelines.

Favorite Ads
Jogger
Wieden+Kennedy 2012
This is my favorite ad of all time. I show every new adworks member this ad. Nike lost title sponsorship rights for the 2012 Olympics to Adidas, so they had to advertise without using athletes. They ended up generating more publicity than adidas that summer. This ad forces me to remember that greatness isn't about how successful you are in the world, it's about how much you have personally overcome. The most accomplished human is probably just some regular person that's been through a lot. One fact about me is that I don't cry. This ad is the only thing that has made me cry in 5+ years. I'm not a Nike fanboy. I don't watch sports. I'm not into fitness. I think everybody has felt like the kid in this ad at some point in their life.
Say It Proud
Ambilhati/Mediacom Indonesia
This is my favorite example of strategy in an advertisement. Head and Shoulders was trying to gain market share in Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world, for years. They finally realized that their sales were extremely low because people had to verbally ask attendants for toiletries and people were too embarrassed to pronounce Head & Shoulders. They ran this ad showing all the common mispronunciations of the brand and told people to say it however they want. Then they made limited edition bottles with different mispronunciations spelled out. Everybody talks about "Lather, rinse, repeat" as an example of small insights in marketing that can change everything. I think it's more about finding the actual reason why people aren't as receptive to your product, then fixing it.
The Balcony
PgLang
There is a lot of distrust for financial infrastructure in the US, and companies are surprisingly good at dealing with it. Services like Chime come across as a cute and harmless app on your phone. This ad is my favorite example. They have someone like Kendrick Lamar who is very trustworthy and outspoken against any form of injustice. You get the sense that he is promoting Cashapp to help people succeed. A lot of ads like this try to use regular people but end up coming across as untrustworthy. If they use someone like Ray Dalio, they seem out of touch. This is a nice workaround. I think we will start to notice a lot more companies like PgLand starting to appear as people realize that music and advertising have a lot of overlap and a lot to gain from one another.
Surfer
BBDO London, 1999
This Guiness ad is widely considered one of the greatest ads of all time, and it is my favorite use of audio in an advertisement. The opening shot grabs your attention right away and the cuts at the end remind me of the star gate sequence in "2001: A Space Odyssey". The whole ad reminds is designed to remind you of a time you were overcome with a sense of accomplishment and excitement.
Kanye Iphone Ad
Yeezy, 2024
This didn't even air nationally but still got a national reach. That is the key here. If he ran an ad for all 50 states, it would have been better to show the clothing line. But if he ran a local ad showing the clothes, it wouldn't have gotten national attention.
Coinbase QR Code
The Martin Agency (technically) 2022
Simple and inexpensive. Nobody sat there for a full minute and didn't scan the barcode. Surprise surprise, I was on AdAge two days later and saw that this ad shot KPIs through the roof. Sometimes if the idea is good enough, you don't have to take risks.
Points of View
The Guardian
I've noticed that simple, quiet ads can make an entire room pause if done right. This ad doesn't scream for attention but that is precisely why it gets your attention. It communicates a lesson that goes beyond their value proposition but it also breaks down the idea of trust and accuracy and demonstrates the guardian's understanding of what we want.

The Copywriter's Handbook

by Robert Bly

This was the first copywriting book I ever read. A few pages in he talks about how you shouldn't write for your portfolio, you should just do your job. I realized that's why I get this cynical feeling about certain ads that other people don't. From that point I started to consider that maybe this is how my brain works.

All You Need to Know About the Music Business

by Donald S. Passman

One of the most helpful books I've ever read. Not only was it helpful but it caused me to learn much more on my own. I started talking to every type of person in the music industry I possibly could, which led me down all sorts of interesting paths.

The Creative Act: A Way of Being

by Rick Rubin

If I ever get stuck on something creatively, I can open a random page of this book and get over it quite fast. This is the closest thing to a tutorial for creativity that exists.

Animal farm

by George Orwell

This was my favorite book in middle school. I thought the concept was so cool. I didn't even know the point of the book until I was almost done and someone told me to look it up cause I just thought the entire book was about animals. This was the first time I noticed something where the concept and delivery was given more thought than the information itself.

Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion

by Robert Cialdini

This is one of the most over-hyped books of all time. I can't help but put it here anyways. I remember my Dad telling me about some of the stuff in this book sometimes whenever he would have to explain why things are the way they are. That means Robert Cialdini was probably my earliest exposure to the field of marketing. I had the pleasure of seeing Robert speak twice during my time at ASU, and I own a signed copy of this book. Sometimes when I was writing copy I would remember that he lives down the road from me in Tempe. Knowing that he was down the road from me didn't make me any better at copywriting, it was just actually just a weird thought I used to get all the time. His book Presuasion is really good. I probably like Presuasion more actually. I don't think my Dad read that, so If I put that I wouldn't have been able to share the cool story about how me as a little kid.

Hey Whipple, Squeeze This

by Luke Sullivan

Luke Sullivan feels like my friend in real life. A lot of the advice here goes beyond what you're doing with a pen and paper. This was the book that helped me imagine actually working at an agency.

Cashvertising

by Drew Eric Whitman

It's easy for marketers to forget that their job is to communicate ways for people to fulfill their needs. This book helped me become more precise and intentional with my writing.

Danny, the Champion of the World

by Roald Dahl

This was my favortite book as a kid. I remember reading it and realizing half way through that I didn't care about anything in the story, it was just written in such a compelling manner. This was probably the first time I realized how important good storytelling is.

Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind

by Al Ries and Jack Trout

Professor James Palmer gave me his personal copy of this book when I was a junior in college. I really enjoyed reading about how to carve out a brand's place in the world. My biggest takeaway was that it is insanely easy to fall into the trap of becoming a mediocre marketer because of how often poor decisions give you good results.

The Ultimate Funnel Swipe File

by Russell Brunson

This was a PDF file that a friend of mine shared with me. It's a very straightforward list of examples showing how you can get creative with technical skills. It made me realize that the more technical skills you have as a marketer, the more creative freedom and impact you have when applying them.
